Delta Air Lines integrates Apple AirTag for bag tracking

Delta Air Lines have officially integrated Apple AirTag technology alongside their existing baggage systems, Skift has revealed.

Providing real-time updates on the location of chosen possessions, AirTags are connected to users’ Apple devices through the Internet of Things (IoT). The habit of placing a tag in baggage for live updates on its whereabouts has become an increasingly common practice with passengers to track their luggage in case of disruption.

Delta has taken the unprecedented step of integrating Apple’s Application Programming Interface (API) into its system, meaning AirTag location data can be shared with the airline. Working alongside Delta’s existing bag tracking software, this step will help manage luggage more efficiently and effectively.

The API integration builds on Delta’s existing partnerships with Apple. In December 2024, they launched the Share Item Location feature in-app, which shared AirTag data with the airline if baggage was misplaced. The API is not exclusive to Delta, meaning the door is open for Apple to partner with other airlines in the future.

Delta currently offers customers 2,500 bonus points if their luggage takes more than 20 minutes to reach them at baggage claim after a domestic flight. AirTag integration is another feature that the carrier hopes will boost their customer service offering. Other initiatives introduced to improve the airline’s offering in 2025 include partnerships with YouTube for in-flight entertainment and Uber for airport pickup and drop-off.
