Yesterday it was announced the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to potentially source neat sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Aether Fuels (Aether).
Aether is a next-generation climate technology firm developing scalable solutions for producing sustainable fuels. It plans to establish SAF production plants in the United States (US) and South East Asia, leveraging its expertise in bio-fuels, e-fuels, gasification, syngas production, and liquids synthesis.
The agreement cements the SIA Group’s intention to procure neat SAF for five years once the plants begin commercial production. But has the potential for an extension of a further five years. According to the press release, the neat SAF will be blended with regular jet fuel and supplied across select airports served by Singapore Airlines and Scoot.
Ms Lee Wen Fen, Chief Sustainability Officer, Singapore Airlines, said:
“This partnership marks another step in the SIA Group’s journey towards our long-term decarbonisation goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. By collaborating with like-minded ecosystem partners such as Aether, we aim to accelerate and scale up the adoption of SAF in our flight operations, laying the groundwork for more sustainable air travel.”
Months earlier, in June, Singapore Airlines and Cathay signed a sustainability-focused MoU which committed to the join advocation of the greatest use of SAF in the APAC region. This included raising public awareness about SAF’s critical role in decarbonising aviation, advocating for supportive policies in the region, and promoting the creation of a standard global accounting and reporting framework to ensure the transparency and verifiability of emission reductions from the use of the fuel.
At Aviation Festival Asia next month industry leaders from across the APAC region will be outlining a big picture strategy for achieving net zero by 2030 through innovation, collaboration, and digitalisation. This will include speakers from Changi Airport Group, Riyadh Air, Noida International Airports and more. To join us onsite, book your ticket here!
