Accessibility trials at YVR with self-driving pods from A&K Robotics

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has begun a new pilot project aimed at increasing accessibility at the airport. Using cutting-edge technology developed by A&K Robotics, all-electric self-driving pods will help users navigate the terminals independently, catering to a range of mobility and guidance needs.

Leveraging integrated real-time mapping software, the pods enable passengers to “accurately and intuitively” track themselves through the airport allowing passengers to independently navigate the terminal’s services.

YVR is one of four Testbeds for B.C’s Integrated Market Place. This initiative, led by Innovate BC, supports the accessibility and inclusivity goals at YVR with the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada contributing $1.6 million to “reimagine mobility” at the airport.

Contextualising the trial further, Tamara Vrooman, President & CEO, Vancouver International Airport said:

“The new self-driving pods made by A&K Robotics represent an important step forward for accessibility at YVR, helping ensure people of all ages and abilities can independently navigate our terminals. Through our role as the first testbed under the Integrated Marketplace, we are supporting the development and implementation of made-in-B.C. solutions that benefit YVR and our community, as well as local businesses. We look forward to having this new technology available for travellers as early as next year.”

The phased approach to the trial will begin with employees, moving on to members of the accessibility community, and finally passenger trials in September. Teams at the airport will continue communicating with A&K Robotics to help adapt the pods to the needs of passengers.

This year, World Aviation Festival (8-10th October) is launching its Digital Accessibility Summit, discussing practical solutions, trust building, the role of technology for inclusivity, and much more. Book your ticket now to avoid missing out!
