Star Alliance, the world’s oldest airline alliance, continues to expand, officially welcoming ITA Airways to the roster earlier this year. Star Alliance now cover around 90% of the global aviation network. Renato Ramos, VP Corporate Strategy, believes the alliance’s importance has been justified by the current turbulent operating climate:
The alliance business shows its relevance once again in network adjustment, because of oil prices going up or geopolitical conflicts. And the partnership strategy comes into play again, like we saw in the Covid-19 pandemic.
Consolidating these strong partnerships remains the alliance’s biggest target. Strategy and tech adoption varies across the carriers, complicating Star Alliance’s mission of seamless connectivity for every traveller. Ramos oversees these improvements, identifying key areas of service that need to be unified across the network. Standardised seat selection processes and baggage tracking are among the targets, but this year’s events have also highlighted the need to improve coordination in IROPs situations.
We are trying to come out come with policies, processes and even systems that will enable carriers to reaccommodate passengers, and that’s so important when you have disruption and you’re changing carriers.
With their 30th anniversary on the horizon next year, Ramos is dedicated to enhancing this customer service layer alongside the existing code shares and interline agreements that serve as the alliance’s foundation. As Official Alliance Partner of both Aviation Festival Asia and World Aviation Festival, Star Alliance recognise that being present at major industry events is key to driving change across their network.
Airlines can’t do this by themselves, and they have to help each other to deliver. Attending Aviation Festival Asia is very important to reinforce that.
