This week, Lufthansa Group and Lilium signed a Memorandum of Understanding for strategic partnership. The pair are committing to shape the future of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) in Europe, laying important groundwork to enable the operation of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft (eVTOL).
Klaus Roewe, CEO of Lilium,said:
“We are delighted that the Lufthansa Group has decided to cooperate with us to jointly advance in the future of flying. The Lufthansa Group has been at the forefront of some of Europe’s most important aviation initiatives, especially in the area of environmental sustainability. We are thrilled to explore opportunities on bringing eVTOL flights to Lufthansa Group customers.”
According to the press release, the companies are exploring innovation opportunities around ground and flight operations, future aircraft maintenance, and flight training. They are also considering a future strategic partnership, analysing opportunities for collaboration with third parties like airports and regional partners.
AAM is set to play a significant role in shaping the future of the industry. Urban Air Mobility (UAM) was even identified in SITA’s Megatrends report as a key influence over travel in the next decade. The report showed that investment in the space across stakeholders is projected to accelerate from $5 billion in 2022 to $28 billion in 2030 with 33 per cent of airlines focusing their investment on technologies for airline operations in VTOL integration.
With predictions showing that electric air taxis will be ubiquitous at major international airports by 2030, Lufthansa and Lilium’s collaboration reflects a proactive approach to staying at the forefront of change in the industry.
