Although the industry has come a long way since the baggage chaos of 2022, missing luggage is still a concern for travellers with 36.1 million bags mishandled in 2023 alone.
Digital solutions like Apple’s AirTag and Find My network accessory are popular with passengers seeking more assurance on the safety of their luggage. In November, Apple announced Share Item Location, a new iOS feature that enables users to securely share this information directly with airlines.
Apple announced that more than 15 airlines, including Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Turkish Airlines, United, Virgin Atlantic, and Vueling will begin accepting Find My item locations.
Recently, Singapore Airlines confirmed to Executive Traveller, plans to integrate Apple AirTags technology, but noted this will only happen “in due course.”
A spokesperson told Executive Traveller this would enable:
“Customers with an Apple AirTag or Find My app-compatible device in their checked baggage to securely share the location of the tag or device. […] This could potentially assist in locating and returning the checked baggage to our customers more efficiently.”
Interestingly, Asia consistently records low baggage mishandling rates compared to Europe and North America, as highlighted in SITA’s Baggage IT Insights 2024.
