In a fragmented global aviation ecosystem, airline alliances are critical to ensuring passengers can enjoy a seamless travel experience. Speaking at Aviation Festival Asia, where Star Alliance served as the event’s Official Alliance Partner, Renato Ramos, Vice President Strategy explained how alliances have evolved to be more important than ever.

Star Alliance was established as the first global aviation alliance back in 1997. Today, it brings together 25 members spanning from small regional carriers to some of the world’s best know airlines. Facilitating collaboration across this diverse network, whilst maintaining the airlines’ individual identities is a challenging task but one necessary for passengers to enjoy the benefits of seamless global connectivity.

Ramos explored how alliances support the end-to-end passenger journey by bridging operational and experiential gaps between member airlines. Describing a “sweet spot” that has been identified recently, he explained:

“Last year with the new process that we have engaged with in Star Alliance, we redefined our true role and purpose, and we identified that there is still – and there will always be – a sweet spot for an alliance. So, evolving from interline and codeshare agreements to an environment that will always require support to bridge the gap of the experience that a passenger has with its preferred airline to supporting the experience when this passenger is traveling with a partner airline.”

To maintain a seamless experience across member carriers, it is imperative that Star Alliance identifies gaps between airlines’ digital infrastructure and constructs a bridge to allow the systems to talk to one another. In the conversation, Ramos offered the example of a PSS vs alternative booking system and explained that the alliance must identify the best solution to link the systems whether it be artificial intelligence, blockchain, or another technology.
