At World Aviation Festival in October, Mohammad Taher, “The Airport Guy” will be involved with key sessions at the ground ops and talent summits, and moderating an airport innovation panel focused on the connected airfield.
In advance of these, Taher shared his insights on the overall landscape. Describing artificial intelligence (AI) as a “buzzword,” he encourages the audience to think in more depth about the root problems, rather than fixating on the AI solution. Explaining the importance of addressing operational inefficiencies and how AI can be leveraged, Taher added:
“Let’s talk about the problem that these solutions are actually going to solve. For me one of the things that is really close to my heart is operational efficiency outside of a terminal building […] that is a very complicated process that actually produces a lot of data, and that data typically never is captured. What happens when you start to capture that data, plug it into something like AI, and actually start churning out insights? For me I’m excited to see what comes out of the back of that.”
From opportunities, to challenges, Taher cautioned that 40 per cent of the industry is set to retire in the next 10 to 15 years, leaving a significant skills gap. Looking at how we attract talent to the industry, he warned that companies must respond to changes in the way people consume information, and must effectively leverage social platforms if they want to reach younger generations.
