LOT Polish Airlines have begun rolling out inflight WiFi powered by Viasat Amara.

The service is offered to long-haul economy passengers on two tiers: Chat (US$7), which allows users to send and receive messages, and Streaming (US$29) to access higher-bandwidth content. Travellers in LOT Business Class and those of a certain status under the Miles & More loyalty programme receive full Internet access free of charge.

Izabela Leszczyńska, Director, Product Development and Customer Experience Office, LOT Polish Airlines, said:

Internet access has become an expected part of the offering on long-haul flights. Therefore, we view its implementation across our fleet as a natural stage in the development of our product, one that responds to the needs of passengers – both those traveling for business and for leisure. We wanted a solution that would ensure stability and high quality, which is why we chose a partner with well-established experience in aviation, whose technology is used by airlines around the world. Our passengers travel with different purposes and expectations. We want them to be able to spend their time on board exactly as they need – productively, staying in touch with loved ones, or in complete relaxation.

The partnership demonstrates Viasat’s ongoing relevance to the aviation industry as a connectivity provider. Big deals with Starlink, who provide WiFi through low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites, have attracted significant attention in recent years. At the same time, the high cost of this services raises questions about generating returns. In an interview with the Times of India, Ben Palmer, Viasat’s Global President (Commercial), said that he saw ongoing opportunities in a hybrid satellite model:

We’ve launched very high-capacity ViaSat-3 satellites. But we’re also focused on integrating services to deliver compelling end-to-end value-based on real customer use cases — aviation, maritime, enterprise, government.
