OAG has released its 2025 Megahub airports ranking.
The report compares airports by the number of scheduled connections and destinations served. Now in its 10th edition, the annual ranking highlights growth points in aviation on a global and regional scale.
OAG once again found London Heathrow (LHR) to be the number-one megahub airport in the world, offering passengers 59,000 possible connections to 226 destinations on its busiest day.
Second place went to Türkiye’s Istanbul Airport (IST), which was also one of the list’s biggest climbers, rising six places from 8th position in the 2024 report. Istanbul’s 25% year-on-year increase in potential connections highlights its important strategic position as a bridge between Europe, Asia, and MENA.
Top LCC megahub airports 2025
OAG’s separate low-cost carrier (LCC) megahubs ranking emphasised the dominance of the Asia-Pacific region in the budget aviation space. 16 of the top 25 LCC megahubs were located in APAC, with Kuala Lumpur (KUL) in Malaysia topping the list. Another success story was Hong Kong (HGK): the airport rose 20 places to 4th on the 2025 ranking, thanks largely to LCC connections tripling from 2024 through the expansion of budget airline HK Express.
Only one of the top 25 LCC megahubs was found in North America, New York JFK. This highlights a potential opportunity for growth, especially with one of the continent’s biggest LCCs, Spirit Airlines, filing for bankruptcy again in August 2025.
