A new report from Moment finds that airlines in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region have a greater uptake on inflight WiFi over other regions.
Surveying 30 regional carriers, the Inflight Connectivity Report found that 95% of APAC’s airlines had fully or partially equipped their fleets with onboard WiFi. The global average currently sits at 89%. Moment’s analysis also found that Asia’s airlines are more likely to offer WiFi for free: 19% of legacy carriers in the region provide complimentary full access to the Internet, higher than 13% worldwide.
Moreover, 35% of all Asia’s carriers offer free inflight messaging, again above the global average of 31%. Moment note that increasing numbers of airlines offer WiFi access at different tiers to increase ROI or to gate inflight Internet access as a loyalty perk.
Adoption remains low among APC’s budget airlines, however: the report finds that only 33% of low-cost carriers (LCCs) offer any kind of inflight WiFi. This demonstrates how offering WiFi has become an industry standard for legacy carriers and long-haul routes, but LCCs remain more cautious about investment and adapting their no-frills service model.
Tanguy Morel, CEO & co-founder of Moment, commented:
The Asia-Pacific market is one of the most advanced connectivity ecosystems globally, with airlines demonstrating different stages of digital maturity. Legacy carriers are setting a very high benchmark, with connectivity increasingly embedded into loyalty ecosystems and premium value propositions, whereas regional airlines are leveraging connectivity to strengthen their brand promise and commercial strategy.
