Changi Airport is set to become Singapore’s largest single-site rooftop solar PV system.
Changi Airport Group (CAG) is positioning a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) system on the rooftops of the terminal buildings, terminal auxiliary structures, and airfield and cargo buildings. The system will have a combined generation capacity of 43 Mega-Watt peak (MWp) and is anticipated to reduce CAG’s carbon emissions by 20,000 tonnes a year.
Contextualising this development within the broader sustainability-focused changes taking place at the airport, Mr Koh Ming Sue, CAG’s Executive Vice President, Engineering & Development, said:
“CAG strives to make Changi a more sustainable aviation hub through reducing carbon footprint from all practical fronts. We have been addressing the airport’s energy demands at its core, which includes upgrading our frontline airport building and systems with best-in-class energy efficient models and expanding our support for the airport community to switch to cleaner energy vehicles.
CAG appointed Keppel Ltd (Keppel) for this project which uses AI/ML algorithms for improved forecasting and energy management. Already well-established as an industry leader, Changi’s adoption of solar technology illustrates its commitment to sustainability. The new solar PV system is set to be completed in early 2025, and Mr Koh Ming Sue shared that the airport will collaborate with more innovative partners as sustainability technology evolves.
At Aviation Festival Asia, 28 – 29 February, Gerald Ng,Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Sustainability, Changi Airport Group will be joining speakers from HK Express, Lufthansa Group, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, and more to discuss how airlines can tailor their decarbonisation strategies in order to reach net zero.
