Halifax Stanfield Airport pilots customer service robots

Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) has introduced two new customer service robots at Halifax Stanfield Airport.

In partnership with local start-up Maritime Robotics, the Canadian airport is piloting the custom-built robots to provide additional customer support. Through their touchscreen interfaces and voice recognition software, travellers can request information on flights, weather, and airport services. If required, the robots can even physically guide customers to locations within a programmed perimeter.

Positioned pre-security and at Arrivals, the customer service robots can supplement existing staff at peak times, boosting efficiency and enhancing the traveller experience. Tiffany Chase, Director of Marketing, Communications & Customer Experience at HIAA, said:

This collaboration marks an exciting step toward enhancing wayfinding and elevating the passenger experience. By embracing technology solutions like these, we are prioritizing airport efficiency and innovation, with a touch of fun in the terminal.

Huijing He, Director at Maritime Robotics, added:

It’s not just about introducing new technology — it’s about enhancing the travel experience for our community and taking a significant step toward the future of travel.

HIAA welcomed 3.98 million passengers in 2024, an 11.2% increase compared to 2023, and Halifax Stanfield’s Master Plan currently predicts that it will process 6.6 million passengers by 2041.

Increasing the use of robots has become a top priority for airports seeking to manage growing passenger numbers without overstretching staff. In 2024, Munich Airport introduce the JEEVES ‘snackbot’, which offers customers a choice of chilled drinks and snacks. Autonomous AI robots were also trialled in Dubai Airport last year, with the aim of improving airport accessibility for passengers with non-visible disabilities.

The 2025 World Aviation Festival (7-9th October) is hosting a Battle of the Robots live on stage to test how strategic and scalable new tech really is. Book your ticket today!
