Recently, Union Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia met with officials to explore ways to speed up immigration and security for international passengers at the country’s major airports like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

The Times of India reported Scindia saying:

“We are discussing the design models to speed up immigration and security for international travellers. New technologies such as e-biometrics are on the anvil and are currently being tested. These will be key in our vision for international aviation hubs in India.”

Biometric technology is already creating a more seamless experience for passengers, eliminating the need to show physical identification and documents. Allowing for faster movement through the airport, enhanced security, and hassle-free, contactless travel, the tech is speeding up airport processes and streamlining the experience for passengers and staff alike.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation in India’s digital initiative, DigiYatra was launched in late 2022 gathering 1.74 million users within six months of launching. These extensive, tech-based improvements to the Indian aviation industry fit within a wider aspiration to become an international aviation hub. In an interview with NDTV in September, Scindia said:

“India, for too long, has had its hub either on the eastern border or the western border. We are currently working with Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) to look at setting up a hub in Delhi to start with. In the next decade or so, the capability of India to have not necessarily one hub but multiple hubs – one in Delhi, one is South India, one on the western side – is certainly there […] Too many of our travellers today go via a third country and I think it is important to look at direct flights and create that hub structure within India.”

At Aviation Festival Asia, Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD, Air India will be on stage discussing the airline’s role in helping to grow the Indian market into the next major global hub. Book your ticket now to hear directly from industry leaders on the evolving APAC landscape.
