The Cambodian aviation industry has experienced a landmark week, as national carrier Air Cambodia expands its fleet and a new US$2 billion airport opens in Phnom Penh.
Air Cambodia set to partner with COMAC
Air Cambodia announced on 9 September that it could buy up to 20 C909 regional jets from COMAC. A competitor to Airbus and Boeing, Air Cambodia’s statement comes as the Chinese aircraft manufacturer seeks to expand its reach beyond mainland China.
The signed memorandum of understanding confirms 10 C909 orders, with the option to purchase a further 10 if required. COMAC aircraft are already in service in multiple Southeast Asian states, including Laos, Indonesia, and Vietnam, but lack certification in Europe and North American.
Air Cambodia operates a range of domestic and international routes. In 2024, the carrier reported operating income growth of more than 20%, with revenue levels at their highest since 2019. Launched in 2009, the airline is part-owned by the Cambodian government, Vietnam Airlines, and Chinese investment groups.
New hub airport opens in capital Phnom Penh
Economic recovery and a tourism drive continue to boost Cambodia’s aviation sector. 9 September also saw the opening of the capital Phnom Penh’s new US$2 billion airport. With three new runways, Techo International Airport has been designed to superseded Phnom Penh International’s singular runway and provide travellers with superior state-of-the-art facilities.
The airport is key to the Cambodian government’s plans to attract 30 million tourists to the country in 2030. 6.7 million international visitors entered the country in 2024, an increase of 23% from 2023. The opening of an airport beside Cambodia’s renowned Angkor Wat temple complex has further contributed to the tourism drive. Market analytics firm Statista now forecasts that the flights market in the country will expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.71%.
Conflict on the Thai border earlier in 2025 threatened to destabilise the region, and the truce remains shaky. Nevertheless, the opening of Techo International Airport, and Air Cambodia’s plans to expand its fleet, demonstrate Cambodia’s ongoing commitment to aviation expansion.
