AirBaltic have added inflight shopping to their SkyNet onboard WiFi portal. Powered by InterLnkd’s AirMall, the system gives passengers the chance to browse more than 20,000 brands on their own devices while in the air.

As the first European airline to adopt Starlink high-speed WiFi, the Latvian carrier’s new retail offering allows customers to order favourite products from their seat without carrying stock onboard. Product recommendations based on passenger profiles and their destinations enhance the personalised aspects of the service. Meanwhile, integration with the airBaltic Club programme provides airBaltic more ways to reward their members.

Natālija Kuzmina, VP Customer Experience & Insights at airBaltic, said:

By adding AirMall to our new Skynet platform, we’re giving passengers a new way to shop in flight from their favourite brands. With curated products, home delivery, and airBaltic Club points earned on every purchase, AirMall is an important step in building on our investment in inflight Wi-Fi and expanding what we can offer our customers onboard.

Monetising high-speed WiFi access has become a hot topic in the aviation industry as more airlines partner with Starlink and Amazon Leo. Offered for free onboard, the installation process for such connectivity comes at a high cost — sometimes estimated to be as high as US$170,000 for every aircraft. airBaltic will be looking for new ways to generate a return on this investment and find new ways to connect with customers through tailored retail.

Last year, InterLnkd also announced a partnership with Viasat that allows airlines with Viasat WiFi to activate the AirMall solution easily.
