Vietjet Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao has stated that the low-cost airline plans to fly to the US.
The announcement came on a visit to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), where Thao also said Vietjet was exploring a dual listing with HDBank on the US stock market. She explained:
We will soon fly to the US, and we are also very excited to explore opportunities to raise capital in New York – the world’s largest stock exchange. This is not only the aspiration of Vietjet and HDBank but also the dream of many Vietnamese enterprises seeking global integration.
Thao is Vietnam’s richest woman, and was visiting New York to celebrate the delivery of Vietjet’s first Boeing 737-8. The airline has ordered 200 aircraft from the Seattle-based aircraft manufacturers, in a historic deal worth US$32 billion – the largest aviation business deal ever recorded between Vietnam and the US.
Thao announcing the US as a Vietjet target destination marks a significant expansion of its business plan. Currently, the low-cost carrier (LCC) flies to 19 domestic airports and 42 international destinations across APAC, including India, China, and Australia.
The plan for dual listing on NYSE alonsigde HDBank, one of Vietnam’s leading financial services businesses, would further bolster Vietjet and Vietnam’s profile on the global stage.
Vietjet’s ambitious plans come the same week as the Financial Times reports that LCCs across Asia are struggling with low profits. Operating on thinner margins than airlines in other regions, LCCs in APAC were hit especially hard by the Covid-19 pandemic due to limited reserves.
Vietjet appears to buck this trend, with H1 2025 pre-tax profits up by a staggering 65% compared to the same period in 2024. Alongside its historic partnership with Boeing, 2025 also saw the airline order more aircraft from Airbus to boost its long- and short-haul capabilities. A new Aircraft Maintenance Technical Centre at the upcoming Long Thành International Airport will further consolidate Vietjet’s position in the APAC aviation market.
