At World Aviation Festival, CEO of Wizz Air József Váradi sat with John Strickland, Director, JLS Consulting to discuss the airline’s key challenges, expansion into new markets, and plans to grow long-haul.

The low-cost airline recently reported a dip in first-half net profit amid geopolitical tensions and supply chain difficulties. During a conversation with Strickland at the World Aviation Festival in October, Váradi mapped out the three categories of challenges the airline is up against and shared his strategies for navigating each of them.

Váradi emphasised a renewed commitment to adaptability in the face of geopolitical uncertainty and critical supply chain issues. He explained how the challenges have already influenced operations at the airline and shared insight into how Wizz Air plans to remain competitive despite these constraints.

When looking to the future, Váradi expressed confidence in the airline’s strategy going forward, saying:

“From a market standpoint, we feel very comfortable with the opportunities we have […] The dramatically expanded market footprint will deliver new layers of growth opportunities. This helps to ‘hedge our bets’, if you want to put it that way. But we are still sticking to the core strategy of Central & Eastern Europe (CEE). This is a great market, economies are converging, GDPs are growing, and that translates into disproportionate airline growth relative to mature markets like Western Europe.”
