Back in May, Miami International Airport (MIA)’s CIO, Maurice Jenkins shared insight into the airport’s digital initiatives and the emerging technologies that are set to shape the airport experience of the future. In the conversation, Jenkins highlighted the airport’s commitment to being a leader in both technology and passenger experience. Reflecting this commitment and echoing Jenkins’ focus on innovation, the airport will be running test programmes with the three winners of the second Public Innovation Challenge, with the goal of eventually scaling these solutions internationally.
The winners of the challenge, announced on Thursday, leverage technology to elevate the experience at MIA for both passengers and employees alike, making the airport a more accessible place for all. The press release offered the following summary of each winner.
- RouteMe – Uses artificial intelligence to allow a passenger to navigate MIA simply with their phone camera.
- Signapse (United Kingdom) – Leverages Generative AI to deliver text to sign language translation, making digital signage accessible to Deaf passengers at MIA.
- Mapsted – Provides airport wayfinding mapping with accessibility features and integration to smart technology devices.
Miami-Dade Innovation Authority (MDIA) will be investing $100,000 into each company to support the testing at MIA which will take place in the next three months. Giving further insight into the challenge, Leigh-Ann A. Buchanan, President & CEO of MDIA, said:
“As one of the 10 most transited airports in the country and the largest gateway to our community, MIA provides the perfect environment in which to demonstrate that inclusive technology solutions and user-driven innovation are essential to elevating the travel experience. The winners of MDIA’s second Public Innovation Challenge have developed solutions that prioritize the needs of all passengers, including those travellers with different physical and hidden disabilities, to navigate the airport effectively and seamlessly.”
MIA’s resolve to be future facing extends beyond its involvement with the Public Innovation Challenge, already planning approximately $9 billion of investment plans over the coming decade as part of its advanced Modernization in Action Plan.
