In a pioneering move for airlines, Korean Air has featured virtual humans in its latest inflight safety video. The airline explained this as an effort to re-engage passengers with the importance of inflight safety but also describes it as a new experience for passengers.

Since 4th January, the video features the virtual girl group of four, MAVE, and a virtual human called Rina who gives safety instructions covering topics like how to store carry-on luggage, wearing a seatbelt, prohibited items during the flight, cabin smoking regulations, procedures in the case of cabin pressure abnormalities, locations of the emergency exits, and how to put on a life jacket. Rina wears a Korean Air flight attendant uniform having completed her safety training at Korean Air’s Cabin Crew Training Centre.

Created by Netmarble FNC’s Metaverse Entertainment in 2022, Rina is the product of state-of-the-art 4D technology and subtle facial movement data to create lifelike expressions and movements. According to the press release, Rina also works as a virtual influencer and Gen Z digital creator, already gaining popularity through social platforms.

This fresh take is expected to increase viewer engagement with safety demonstrations and appeal to a diverse customer base of all ages and backgrounds.

A Korean Air representative said:

“This will become a great example of the synergy created between the aviation industry and digital technology. We intend to change perceptions of inflight safety videos with these new ideas, and make them more relatable and engaging for passengers,”
