Royal Air Maroc have announced they will install Starlink WiFi on 41 aircraft.
This will make the carrier the first in Africa to offer the ultra-high-speed internet service. Powered by SpaceX’s network of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites, Starlink access onboard means passengers can use their own devices as they would at home, whether that’s browsing, live streaming, or video calls. Starlink WiFi also gives airlines a platform for better inflight service and onboard communications.
Royal Air Maroc say WiFi will be provided free to all members of the Safar loyalty programme. Most of Royal Air Maroc’s jets do not provide any internet access, so this represents a significant upgrade.
The race to install ultra-high-speed WiFi is heating up across the aviation industry. First movers on Starlink, such as Qatar Airways and United Airlines, have launched customer-pleasing features such as live sports access on their inflight entertainment (IFE) systems. Meanwhile, Delta and JetBlue have signed connectivity agreements with rival project Amazon Leo, which also offers further opportunities for the airlines to be integrated in the Amazon ecosystem.
Royal Air Maroc becomes the first airline in Africa to announce modern connectivity of this kind. It is currently unclear which 41 of its 61 aircraft will be upgraded to provide the service. The carrier had previously set the ambitious plan of doubling its fleet size from 2023 to 2033, partly in an effort to support Morocco as it co-hosts the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
