United Airlines has launched its biggest-ever international expansion, adding 10 new cities.

Starting in March 2027 and rolling out across the summer, United will be the only US airline serving eight of these routes. This network expansion targets desirable holiday destinations across Asia and Europe, from Okinawa, Japan to Ljubljana, Slovenia.

CEO Scott Kirby commented:

The creative and strategic way we’ve expanded our international network since the pandemic has made all the difference, not only for our customers and employees, but also as a way to differentiate United and build a brand focused on customers. We offer the most flights across the Atlantic and Pacific and Newark is the best Atlantic gateway in the country – so far this year, it’s the most on-time airport in the New York City area. We’re going to keep building on that momentum as we welcome the new A321XLR to our fleet and continue to elevate the travel experience for every customer who chooses United.

Most of the new flights will depart from United’s hub at New York Newark airport. United has added 60 international destinations in the past decade, while the launch of the Polaris cabin has expanded the carrier’s premium reach.

Next summer’s flights from Newark to Luxembourg, Marseille, Ibiza, and Valencia, and the new Washington-Toulouse route, will be operated by the Airbus A321XLR. This long-range narrowbody jet is a game-changer for airlines, opening up long-haul journeys that were previously financially unviable.

Competitors American are also introducing the A321XLR, announcing last autumn that their first route using the aircraft would connect New York JFK and Edinburgh. Like American, United are configuring their A321XLRs to emphasise premium, including 20 Polaris suites and 12 Premium Plus seats — 16 more premium suites than on United’s single-aisle Boeing 757-200. This service will also feature Starlink-powered WiFi for a seamless connectivity experience.

Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United, said:

We aim to have a destination on our route map for every traveller, at every stage of their lives. Whether it’s a business trip, a dream honeymoon, a bucket-list adventure, or a trip home to see family, we’re making the world feel smaller and connecting cultures at a scale no other airline in the world can match.
