An isolated island group in the North Atlantic, Bermuda has a history of serving as a stopover point for passing ships and air voyages.
But now, the archipelago is being put at the centre rather than the periphery of a transport network. Launched in 2023, BermudAir aims to bring more leisure travellers to explore is cerulean seas, while also serving the islands’ 65,000 residents.
Adam Scott founded the airline and continues to serve as its CEO. Geopolitics has bolstered BermudAir’s recent performance, as Canadians seek sunshine destinations outside the US:
We’ve seen an incredible uptick in in demand from Canada. In the last year, we’re really pleased that we’ve increased the number of Canadians coming to the beautiful island of Bermuda by 28%.
Bermuda’s financial services industry also means the airline is well-placed to service business travellers and wealthy locals. Operating four Embraer jets, BermudAir can guarantee no passenger will receive a middle seat, while inflight service details include offering Bermuda’s iconic Dark ‘N’ Stormy cocktail.
But while the carrier strives to create a luxury environment at affordable prices, Scott has encountered a range of challenges since the airline launched operations in 2023. As well as slot issues, BermudAir is trying to build service to a destination generally considered as seasonal. Scott says one of the things his team are keen to do is emphasise that Bermuda can be visited any time of year:
It’s traditionally the place where people from the Northeast US and Canada go in the summer months But it’s actually gorgeous on a wet Tuesday in January, and even through hurricane season.
Even as the airline works with tourism boards to get the message out, Scott concedes that there is a limit on growth in Bermuda. Hotels on the tiny islands only have so much capacity, after all, and residents so much demand for travel. To continue its growth trajectory, BermudAir is expanding to serve Anguilla, Belize, and Turks & Caicos.
That’s really where we see the longevity and the scalability of our model, because we can provide the same fantastic product and fantastic service in a lot of other markets, and hopefully share a little bit of an airline that has an NPS of 78 to to more islands.
