Since launching in 2020 as a subsidiary of Japan Airlines, Zipair has expanded significantly into the US market, enhancing connectivity on popular routes between Japan and America. Now profitable after a difficult launch period during the Covid-19 pandemic, new CEO and President Yasuhiro Fukada is excited to steer Zipair into the future.

As a low-cost carrier operating between competitive destinations, Fukada is keen to explore further areas for efficiency. These include optimising payments to create a seamless experience for customers while guaranteeing revenue for the airline. But investing in the overall experience remains paramount, and Zipair has delivered one of the most cutting-edge enhancements yet: high-speed inflight WiFi provided through Starlink. The first Starlink-equipped flight in Asia took off in February 2026 in Zipair livery. The investment Fukada believes was important in connecting with young travellers and enhancing onboard service even on low-cost flights:

The air should be the sanctuary from ground activities, but this high-speed Internet enables almost the same experience.

The number of US travellers heading to Japan continues to break records. In 2025, Zipair added Houston to its growing roster of American destinations as it pursues its market edge. To retain this, Fukada wants to keep the airline at the frontier of innovation moving forward

All the airlines end up doing the same thing, so we need to stay several steps ahead and launch new services.
