Virgin Australia have launched new app features that the airline claims will cut customer check-in times by as much as 50%.

‘Years in the making’, the enhancements will be launched across 10 Australian airports in the coming months. A first for an airline in the country, the new ‘one-stop’ process will allow passengers to check in ahead of time, print bag tags, and drop their luggage without scanning their boarding pass multiple times. A dedicated Priority Bag Drop for frequent flyers and business class guests will further create a seamless, rapid experience for all passengers.

Alex Plummer, Virgin Australia General Manager, Digital, commented:

Nearly 80 per cent of our guests use the Virgin Australia mobile app and website to check in for flights and manage their booking, so we’re doubling down on improving our digital experience to slash the time it takes to check-in and bag drop by up to 50 per cent.

Additional mobile app features included in the upgrade allow passengers to access ‘Fly Ahead and Fly Later’ and ‘Fly Earlier’ services, previously only available through call centres or at the airport. These offers allow eligible guests and Velocity members to change flights on the day of travel through the app. Passengers can also bid for Business Class and the premium Economy X seating in-app.

In 2000, Virgin Australia were the first airline to introduce online check-in. Other recent innovations include the Pets In Cabin ticket policy and a collaborative partnership with OpenAI for AI integration.
