International Airlines Group (IAG) has announced it will use OpenAirlines’ SkyBreathe platform to optimise fuel use.
600 aircraft acrosss the group’s airlines — Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, LEVEL, and Vueling — will benefit from SkyBreathe’s data analysis capabilities. From a wealth of information points, including weather conditions, flight plans, and aircraft performance, SkyBreathe can identify areas for reducing fuel consumption and improving operational efficiency.
José Antonio Barrionuevo, IAG’s Chief Financial and Sustainability Officer, said:
Fuel is one of the largest costs for our airlines, and ongoing fuel price volatility has reinforced the importance of improving efficiency wherever we can. Having access to deeper operational insight will help identify savings more quickly and reduce unnecessary fuel burn.
The platform has already launched across IAG’s airlines, with the exception of British Airways, where SkyBreathe will roll out in the coming months. In the past, different systems have been used to monitor fuel-saving. Now, all member airlines will have access to a single source of truth that can better measure performance and guide improvements.
Fuel prices have skyrocketed in recent months, exceeding US$100 per barrel for weeks at a time as conflict in the Middle East strains supply chains. IAG have recently announced investments in startups producing efficiency-boosting airline coatings, as well as hybrid APUs, as the group seeks to minimise such costs as far as possible.
Alexandre Feray, Founder and CEO of OpenAirlines, said:
We are honoured to support IAG as it brings fuel efficiency management onto a single, unified platform with SkyBreathe. Built for the scale of a group like IAG, our AI-driven platform will help all its airlines align around a common approach and drive measurable efficiency gains. We’re excited to work with IAG and see what we can achieve together.
